A Grand Day Out!

TEWKESBURY READY TO STAGE A GRAND DAY OUT!

A free Grand Day Out is the pinnacle of Over the Rainbow as Tewkesbury gets ready to mark the year anniversary of the floods and show the world that it is very much back in business.

A family day with street entertainers, a picnic in the Abbey grounds, live music and a fairground will be among the activities on offer in the town on Sunday 20th July. It will be the culmination of a week-long series to demonstrate that the town is a vibrant place which has moved on from last year’s floods.

Stilt walkers, dragon puppets and Barnaby–bear with me will be on hand, along with magic tricks from Gracie Spoon and storytelling from Alchemy Entertainments. Andy Clay and Thomas Trilby will be showing off their juggling, plate spinning and uni–cycling skills while live music will be provided by cabaret band Swervy World and their mix of jazz, jive, Western and disco.

Church Street will be closed to traffic so that visitors can make the cost of the towns shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.

Earlier in the day there will be an act of commemoration by Blue Wave to remember the people who died in the floods followed by a service in the Abbey which will be covered by BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

At 12 noon, people will be encouraged to get together to Hug the Abbey for an aerial photograph which the organizers hope will replace the picture beamed around the world last year when the Abbey was surrounded by flood water.

During the afternoon, there will be a concert in the Pageant Meadow with The Happy Accidents, My Generation and Show of Hands.  It will be followed by an evening concert with Which Way Up, Subkicks and Spunge.

The grand finale will be a spectacular firework display. As darkness falls, the sky around Tewkesbury Abbey will light up with a stunning pyrotechnic display set in time to a specially compiled selection of music. It will include the re-creation of a rainbow and a series of silver waterfalls that will be launched from the roof and cascade down the south wall

“A lot of effort has been put into the day and everyone has pulled together to create a day that we hope will be memorable for all involved,” said Canon Paul Williams, one of the event’s organisers.

‘We really want people to come along to join together and help us show that Tewkesbury is very much back in business.’
